Working in a startup is very different than working in a large enterprise. Agility, intensity, passion levels are unmatched. Ask one on hiring side - lot of effort and skill needed in finding right people.
For your team, define your value system - what is important for you? We have given more attention to following qualities for candidates:
1) A Giver - Givers find joy in giving and doing great work. They don't think too much about give/take on each transaction OR being too calculative in the mind.
2) Sincerity - Sincere personalities are just pleasure to work with. You don't have to run after them to get your work done.
3) Authentic - More Natural in their conversation. One can trust.
4) Wise - More one knows, more one will realize that there is so much more to know. It would be easy for the wise to say "I don't know". There is a curiosity in them yet a little doubt or wonderment about every thing(because there are so many possibilities). Ignorant minds will cook up something. Over-confident will just talk random stuff with conviction. With time, both will find their credibility questioned.
During interviews, one can observe for above qualities during conversations with candidates.
Now how to become better at spotting above qualities? One by experience and second, rely on your intuition. Meditation is one way to hone your intuition. It brings clarity in mind and improves one's observation/perceptive abilities.
At the end, once you find candidates with above qualities, it's your job to take care of them. They will be precious pillars in the growth of your organization. Idea is not find perfect personalities but find one's with strong value system.
